March 2017: A recent Microsoft Update will cause Excel 2010 (v14) to Crash on creating a new Project and also at other times.  References:

Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do till Microsoft fixes. We suggest: Rolling back the update till Microsoft fixes. This may include rolling back the Windows update that came with it – see links above.   Alternetely you can upgrade to Excel 2013 or 2016 – issue is only on Excel 2010.
